LASIK is one of the most recognized forms of laser vision correction, but it may not be the right fit for every patient. For some people, thin corneas or high asymmetry in the shape of the eye may make PRK a safer and more appropriate option.
At iSight Care, Dr. Sane evaluates each patient’s eyes carefully before recommending LASIK, PRK, or another vision correction procedure. The goal is not just clearer vision - it is choosing the option that supports safety and long-term eye health.
The cornea is the clear front surface of the eye. During LASIK, a thin flap is created in the cornea before the laser reshapes the tissue underneath. Because of this, there needs to be enough corneal thickness to safely create the flap and still leave the cornea structurally stable.
If a patient has thin corneas, LASIK may remove more tissue than is ideal. In these cases, an eye surgeon may recommend PRK because it does not require creating a corneal flap. Instead, PRK treats the surface of the cornea, which may preserve more of the eye’s natural strength.
High asymmetry means the shape or curvature of the cornea is uneven. This can show up during corneal mapping, which is an important part of a laser vision correction evaluation. Even if your vision prescription seems straightforward, corneal asymmetry may affect whether LASIK is the safest option.
Our eye surgeon may look closely for signs of irregular curvature, early corneal weakness, or other risk factors before approving LASIK. If the cornea appears less predictable, PRK may be recommended because it avoids flap-related concerns and allows the surgeon to treat the eye in a more conservative way.
PRK and LASIK can both correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism, but the best choice depends on the health and structure of your eyes. PRK may be considered for patients who have:
• Thin corneas
• Mild corneal asymmetry
• Mild corneal irregularity
• Dry eye concerns
• Occupations where avoiding a corneal flap may be preferred
For patients in Los Altos and the Bay Area, this is why a detailed consultation with Dr. Sane is so important. Advanced testing helps identify small details that are not visible during a basic vision exam.
A laser vision correction evaluation is more than checking your glasses prescription. Dr. Sane will assess corneal thickness, corneal shape, tear film health, pupil size, eye pressure, and overall eye health. These details help determine whether LASIK, PRK, EVO ICL, or another option may be better suited for your eyes.
Many patients come in expecting LASIK, only to learn that PRK is the safer recommendation. That does not mean they are not candidates for laser vision correction. It simply means their eyes may benefit from a different approach.
The right vision correction procedure should be personalized. Thin corneas and asymmetry do not always rule out laser vision correction, but they do require careful evaluation by an experienced eye surgeon. At iSight Care in Los Altos, Dr. Sane takes the time to review your test results, explain your options, and recommend a treatment plan based on your eye health and vision goals.
